What is the white chalk in my aluminum water bottle and how do I get rid of it?
Q. I have two aluminum water bottles and I've only used one so far, after a few days I noticed that there was some white chalk on the inside of the bottle. After washing and soaking I still can't remove the chalk that has formed. Any ideas on what this stuff is and how I can get rid of it? Also if anyone knows is it harmful?

A. Sounds like hard water build up, but I don't think that would start showing up so soon. It usually takes more than a few days. Anyway, try putting some vinegar in the bottle, with a spoonful of uncooked rice. Put the cap on and shake like mad. The vinegar will dissolve the mineral build up (if that is what it is) and the rice will act like a scouring pad. Rinse very well after using the vinegar, then leave the cap off of the water bottle overnight to let the smell evaporate.

How do I remove dried mud/chalk completely from rubber floor mats?
Q. The chalk in the mud leaves big white marks on the mats, and it's very hard to get rid of them. I have tried all kinds of cleaning products, plus leaving the mats in warm water for several hours and then scrubbing them. But every time they dry I can see some of the chalk is still there. Any suggestions? They're washed once a week, so it's not because the mud is very old or anything.

A. I have the same problem as there's a lot of chalk in the ground where I live and there seems to be no easy way to get it off the mats. What I do is leave them in the tub for an hour or so, scrub them, drain the water out of the tub, then scrub them with lots of soap (or whatever you prefer to use), leave them for at least 30 minutes with the soap still on them, scrub again, and then rinse the soap off. So far that has worked the best for me. And like you I have also tried so many different things. The key seems to be to leave the soap on there for a while (no water) after a good scrub.

How can you make chalk that can be used to write on blackboards? What are the procedures and materials?
Q. What are the procedures and materials? The chalk should be able to write well in blackboards. Please explain.
Asked by elvesrattackingme - Thu Nov 8 06:05:50 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The mineral chalk is calcium carbonate, but blackboard chalk is actually gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate, CaSO4.2H2O, because calcium carbonate is a little bit too crumbly. Here is what Wikipedia says: From Wikipedia article on "Chalk": Although traditionally composed of natural chalk, modern blackboard chalk is generally made from the mineral gypsum (calcium sulfate), often supplied in sticks of compressed powder about 10 cm long. I should imagine that small amounts of starch or some similar binder is also used, to make the particles stick together.

How can I tell whether some old chalk is clay chalk or calcium carbonate chalk?
Q. I have some old chalk and I need to know what kind it is before I use it on a new chalkboard. I do not have the package that the chalk came in anymore.
Asked by PeterGriffin - Sat Jun 26 16:50:22 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Scrape a little of the chalk into a bottle cap, saucer, or other small container. Add a few drop of vinegar - if it fizzes, it's probably calcium carbonate, if it doesn't, it's probably not.

How exactly does drawing a circle of chalk on the ground and sitting inside it protect you from demons?
Q. I saw this advice on Y/A today as one of the ways you can protect yourself from demons while using the ouija board. I am curious to know how it works. Are demons allergic to chalk or something?
Asked by Tukmyhamster - Tue Jul 20 08:42:59 2010 - - 22 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Casting a circle is a pagan practice. It keeps things in and out. The actual chalk and visual presence of the circle is not where the protection comes from, it comes from the intent of the circle caster. The person who casts the circle has to do so with the intent of it being for protection in order for it to protect. The chalk is just a tool. A circle can be cast without the use of chalk. It can be cast by walking around in a circle, using a stick of incense and tracing a circle, or just mentally visualizing a circle of protection around the person. I know that you don't believe in all this stuff but I'm just giving you the reasoning behind it. When it comes to magick and spiritual protection (that doesn't involve a deity) etc. it is… [cont.]

A. The magnet paint is usually sold as a coating that you paint on under the final coat. Chalk board paint is the final coat because it has additives that give it a slightly rough texture. These paints are usually available at any of your local hardware stores.

Asked by Grr. - Tue Aug 24 09:15:08 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Another good choice for marking is bar soap slivers that have worn to a sharp edge. When they get to that stage, toss them in a drawer so they can dry out, then use them for marking. The big issue with standard blackboard chalk is that it tends to be harder than tailor's chalk, and is so blunt it doesn't mark accurately unless you sharpen it into a chisel shape. If you want to do it like a professional, you'll mark around your pattern, and then cut away the entire line, leaving something the size and shape of the original pattern, like: Magical thefts from the sewing room are often cat-related in this house... as are thread tensions that go wonky while sewing -- until you notice the kitten paw on the thread spool. A. You can put glossy Formica (laminate used for counters) on a backing and use that as white board. A counter company could cut you a disk or you can buy sheet Formica and glue it yourself. It really helps to have a router and a laminate trimming bit for a nice edge. There has recently come on the market a glossy White Board paint that does not absorb these markers the way that ordinary gloss paint tends to do. Here is one brand and searching for Dry Erase or Whiteboard paint will show you others. Personally, if you do go this route, I would use an extra smooth MDF or hardwood plywood material from which to cut the disk.

How do I find out how many atoms of chalk it takes to write my name?
Q. (lab) I weighed the chalk on an electronic scale, wrote my name on the board then reweighed the chalk. It decreased from 9.27g to 9.25g. Now I have to convert it to molecules so I divided it by CaCO3's atomic mass (100.09g) and multiplied it by 6.02x10^23 and got 5.57x10^23 particles. Is this right?
Asked by ressi7589 - Wed Jan 3 23:15:41 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. actually no. if you want to find how many atoms of chalk it takes to WRITE your name, then you need to USE the weight of the the chalk it took to write your name. so 9.27g - 9.25g = .02g of chalk it took to write your name. then do .02 / 100.09 6.02x10^23 = 1.2029 10^20 atoms of chalk.

Q. I have an old chalk board with a surface that is too smooth to see any writing... Any suggestions?
Asked by baygirl - Fri Jan 8 15:34:17 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Step 1 Clean the board with a wet sponge and dry it with a rag. Step 2 If the chalkboard is chipped, repair it with the all-purpose putty. Follow instructions from the putty can for best results. Step 3 Lightly sand the chalkboard with fine-grit sandpaper. If you had to fill any chips, use the sand paper to level the putty with the surface of the board. Wipe dust from the board with a rag. Step 4 Mask off the chalkboard's trim. Place on the drop cloth in a well-ventilated workshop, garage or outdoors. Step 5 Following the manufacturer's directions, spray the chalkboard paint on the surface of the old board. Two or three light coats of paint are much better than one heavy coat. Allow to dry between coats. Step 6 Check the chalkboard paint… [cont.]

A. The red in chalk is produced artificially and really only gives you a deep pink colour instead of a true red. It would be very expensive to produce a chalk that gave a true red colour because it would mean using cochineal which is a product that is produced at the start by hand picking the insect that provides the red or carmine dye. Wiki article explains about cochineal further ...
