How do I remove dried mud/chalk completely from rubber floor mats?
Q. The chalk in the mud leaves big white marks on the mats, and it's very hard to get rid of them. I have tried all kinds of cleaning products, plus leaving the mats in warm water for several hours and then scrubbing them. But every time they dry I can see some of the chalk is still there. Any suggestions? They're washed once a week, so it's not because the mud is very old or anything.

A. I have the same problem as there's a lot of chalk in the ground where I live and there seems to be no easy way to get it off the mats. What I do is leave them in the tub for an hour or so, scrub them, drain the water out of the tub, then scrub them with lots of soap (or whatever you prefer to use), leave them for at least 30 minutes with the soap still on them, scrub again, and then rinse the soap off. So far that has worked the best for me. And like you I have also tried so many different things. The key seems to be to leave the soap on there for a while (no water) after a good scrub.

How can you make chalk that can be used to write on blackboards? What are the procedures and materials?
Q. What are the procedures and materials? The chalk should be able to write well in blackboards. Please explain.
Asked by elvesrattackingme - Thu Nov 8 06:05:50 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments
A. The mineral chalk is calcium carbonate, but blackboard chalk is actually gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate, CaSO4.2H2O, because calcium carbonate is a little bit too crumbly. Here is what Wikipedia says: From Wikipedia article on "Chalk": Although traditionally composed of natural chalk, modern blackboard chalk is generally made from the mineral gypsum (calcium sulfate), often supplied in sticks of compressed powder about 10 cm long. I should imagine that small amounts of starch or some similar binder is also used, to make the particles stick together.

How do I keep a chalk drawing from smearing?
Q. I just completed a chalk drawing, and I'm trying to keep it from smearing. I tried this can of Krylon Workable Fixatif I got at Walmart, but the chalk still comes off when I put my finger on it. I also tried hairspray, but it just makes the drawing look blotchy, and the chalk STILL smears. What can I do?

A. I know the perfect remedy. Try this hairspray,... "Beyond the Zone Pro Formula", Frozen Stiff 24/7 Freez'N'Hold ultimate hair spray. It's a tall purple can with a dark purple top and smells good too, although I don't use it for my hair, heh heh.. It's not cheap stuff either, you can find it at beauty supply stores like Sally's (store) not WAL-MART, bluegh! I never buy art stuff from there. Oh and don't spray your artwork with the spray too close to the picture, go about 12 inches away and spray a mist over the work, repeat if you feel you have to. Now with this spray you can run your hand over the work and nothing will happen! Hm, fixative never works for me too.

How do I make a Chalkboard for Liquid Chalk?
Q. Looking to make a 19" diameter chalk board. I'd like to use liquid chalk on it. Can anyone tell me what to use or how to make? Thank you.
Asked by bhandel76 - Sat Aug 8 15:08:20 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You can put glossy Formica (laminate used for counters) on a backing and use that as white board. A counter company could cut you a disk or you can buy sheet Formica and glue it yourself. It really helps to have a router and a laminate trimming bit for a nice edge. There has recently come on the market a glossy White Board paint that does not absorb these markers the way that ordinary gloss paint tends to do. Here is one brand and searching for Dry Erase or Whiteboard paint will show you others. Personally, if you do go this route, I would use an extra smooth MDF or hardwood plywood material from which to cut the disk.

How do I find out how many atoms of chalk it takes to write my name?
Q. (lab) I weighed the chalk on an electronic scale, wrote my name on the board then reweighed the chalk. It decreased from 9.27g to 9.25g. Now I have to convert it to molecules so I divided it by CaCO3's atomic mass (100.09g) and multiplied it by 6.02x10^23 and got 5.57x10^23 particles. Is this right?
Asked by ressi7589 - Wed Jan 3 23:15:41 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. actually no. if you want to find how many atoms of chalk it takes to WRITE your name, then you need to USE the weight of the the chalk it took to write your name. so 9.27g - 9.25g = .02g of chalk it took to write your name. then do .02 / 100.09 6.02x10^23 = 1.2029 10^20 atoms of chalk.

What is the purpose of using chalk on the tip of a pool stick cue?
Q. I was just wondering, why exactly do people use the chalk on the pool stick when playing? What is its actual purpose?
Asked by love4smoothjazz - Sun Sep 17 20:43:33 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments
A. So that the cue tip does not glance off the ball. When you hit the cue ball, you want to impart a certain spin, to position it for your next shot, to slow it down quickly so it doesn't keep rolling and drop into a pocket. To put spin on the ball (also known as putting a little "English" on it), you need the cue tip to strike the cue ball off center. The chalk helps impart friction, meaning the cue tip doesn't just slide off the cue ball and mess up your shot.

What Solvent Would You Recommend to Remove Chalk from a Car Window?
Q. A friend of mine recently had his/her car vandalised, and I was wondering whether white spirit would be a good solvent to get rid of it with. What about terpentine? Methylated spirits maybe? I was thinking that maybe she could use vinegar or some cheap, diluted acid to get rid of it, because chalk is a carbonate and you would have CO2, a salt and water. The salt and water should all wash off too. What do you think?

A. Firstly you have to take not of the product's brand and where it was manufactured. Most of us know that Chinese products can often be unreliable due to their quick process manufacturing. Nonetheless a chalkboard is a basic product and it suprises me that you have this to problem. Chalkboards must never be sprayed with window cleaner, ajax or most cleaning products as it tends to reduce the friction cause between the chalk and the board. Hence the chalk will not stick. However I can't really think of an actual product that will improve the chalkboard. Sorry about that. NOTE: Maybe change the chalk that you are currently using. scott.
