Rubber stamping machine and plates?
Q. I inherited a huge assortment of rubber stamping metal plates and wood plates and the machine to make them with . iI am not sure how old this thing is as i can't find anything on it . These plates have everything from tree's to bears to hearts and more. In the end i see a huge box or box's with hundred's of rubber stamps . But i'd like to know more about it and how old this thing is . Where would i go to find this out?

A. Is it a machine for making stamps? This site may be able to help you with working out what sort of machine you have: If you want to learn how to use the stamps themselves, there are heaps of online places with tutorials and ideas for you to do that: i hope these sites help you get started finding out what you want to know. It sounds like you have a wonderful collection of tools there.

What is the proper technique for using rubber stamps when painting?
Q. I have heard that you can use rubber stamps with regular house wall paint to paint on walls. I bought some butterfly rubber stamps to decorate my nursery, but was looking for tips on this. Do you dip the stamp in the paint or do you brush the paint on? Any tips are appreciated. THANKS!

A. Most rubber stamps have either too much detail or not enough surface for the paint to hold onto since paint is so much thinner and runnier than the inks made to use with rubber stamps. If you really want to give it a try, I suggest using a rubber brayer to apply a very thin coat of paint because if you dip the stamp or use any kind of brush, the paint will run into areas of the stamp not meant to be part of the design. Now the stamps that will work well are the foam stamps that are also sold in the rubber stamp department. These are meant to be used with paint and are less detailed with a higher raised surface to avoid the mess you may encounter with rubber stamps. You just brush the paint onto these with a foam brush or simply dip into a… [cont.]

What is the difference between rubber and plastic stamps?
Q. What is the difference between a wooden rubber stamp and a clear acrylic stamp? Are they supposed to give a different effect, be used for totally different crafts, or are they generally the same thing, just different materials used to make the stamp itself?

A. People seem to love the clear stamps, but I can't get a good image with them. It's great to see exactly where you're stamping, but mine turn out fuzzy. There's so much to like about the clear ones, except I CAN'T DO IT! I've been stamping for a very long time and have a couple hundred stamps easily, but I sure can't use the acrylic. And the ones I have other people have used just fine. It's me. Get a couple and try them, but I'll stick to rubber.
